Welcome to the Métis Centre of NAHO

The Métis Centre is a Métis-controlled centre of the National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO). The Métis Centre is dedicated to improving the mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and social health of all Métis in Canada. We are a centre devoted to promoting Métis health issues through public education and health promotion.

Through the advancement and sharing of health information, the Métis Centre is working to:

  • Improve the knowledge base in Métis health.
  • Promote Métis health issues at the national and provincial levels.
  • Facilitate community-based health research.
  • Support capacity building in Métis communities.

The Métis Centre also believes that the key to community wellness lies in the transmission of traditional knowledge and healing practices. Affirming and protecting traditional knowledge, as a means to enhancing the health and well-being of Métis, is a primary goal of the Métis Centre.

Métis Centre launches online literature and statistical information database

To increase access to Métis health and well-being information, the Métis Centre has developed two searchable online databases—a literature database and a statistical database.

Together, the databases will aim to serve as a one-stop repository of Métis information.

The statistical database, developed in collaboration with Statistics Canada, contains over a 1,000 statistics tables on Métis adults from the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. More than 1,000 additional tables will be added soon. Tables from the 2006 Aboriginal Children’s Survey and Aboriginal Peoples Survey (Child and Youth) will also be added, along with 2006 Census tables.

Over 60 articles have already been added to the literature database, including peer-reviewed and grey literature on Métis health and well-being. Information such as sample size, study type, indicators, etc., has been extracted from the articles and annotated.

The databases will be accompanied by resources geared towards building capacity among Métis stakeholders, such as tutorials on statistical concepts, a terminology glossary and a bibliography generator for citations.
