Academic Engagement Métis Youth Expressions Based on proceedings from the Nakoda Lodge Think Tank hosted by the Métis Centre in 2007, youth well-being has been identified as a priority by the Métis Centre. Participants at Healthy Messages focus groups conducted in 2008 also expressed the importance of highlighting Métis youth and their accomplishments. The Métis Youth Expressions project will combine video recordings of Métis youth artistic expressions to be showcased in a DVD and discussion guide. The goal of this project is to explore and celebrate contemporary Métis youth identity and Métis diversity, as well as to showcase Métis pride. This summer, gatherings will take place across Canada where youth will be invited to sing, fiddle, jig, rap, dance or even just narrate in front of the camera. Métis youth are also encouraged to submit videos and hard copies of artwork, music, standup comedy, poetry, or any other form of artistic expression, by mail. A secondary aim of this project is to engage youth by inviting selected youth from across the country to participate in a two day social media symposium. This symposium will provide youth with the opportunity to discuss effective methods for youth engagement and to learn basic videography skills. These youth will also be asked to participate at our various regional talent shows, as well as sit on a selection panel to peer-review submissions. The DVD will be available in January 2010 and will be distributed across Canada.
