Capacity Building Métis Women’s Health and Well-being In 2004, Métis Centre staff participated in pre-planning meetings with representatives from various national Aboriginal organizations. This led to the Aboriginal Women and Girls’ Health Roundtable held in April, 2005. During the three-day event, participants identified key issues that impact the health of Aboriginal women and girls, and made recommendations for change. The Métis Centre has participated in the Aboriginal Women’s Health and Healing Research Group (AWHHRG) as a member of its Planning Committee. AWHHRG is a national network of First Nations, Inuit and Métis researchers interested in community-based research with Aboriginal communities. The Métis Centre, in partnership with the Women of the Métis Nation (WMN), contributed research and statistical analysis to policy papers for the first ever National Aboriginal Women’s Summit, held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in June, 2007. Conference themes included health, safety and wellness, and equality and empowerment. Papers on Métis women and health policy, and violence against Métis women are available at http://www.laa.gov.nl.ca/laa/naws/policy.htm. The Women of the Métis Nation approached the Métis Centre for its assistance in the development of Women of the Métis Nation Health Policy Paper, tabled during the summit. Last Update: May 15 2009 |
