Capacity Building Capacity Building To encourage the increased participation of Métis in health careers, the Métis Centre was involved in the preparation of the NAHO publication Lifelines: Profiles of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Health Careers, published in 2005. The Métis Health Professional Resource Network was developed in 2004. A web-based listing of Métis professionals working in population health careers, it was seen as a means of facilitating information-sharing, networking, mentorship and employment opportunities. The web-based listing was discontinued due to technical problems, but the Métis Centre is looking at other means of being a resource network for Métis health profeissionals. Initiatives were undertaken during the 2004-05 fiscal year to assist Métis communities identify and respond to their health needs and priorities. A model for conducting community-based needs assessments was developed. Click here to view the Needs Assessment Guide for Métis Communities. The Métis Centre invited the five provincial Métis organizations, as well as to the Métis Settlements General Council and the Métis Nation Northwest Territory, to attend a series of two-day workshops on Métis Community Capacity Building. These were delivered in four provinces during March and April, 2005. In 2003, the Métis Centre established an innovative Fellowship Program to encourage Métis graduate students to develop much-needed research and scholarship on health issues affecting Métis communities. From 2004 to 2007, three annual fellowships worth $5,000 were awarded to Métis researchers studying important population health issues. Since then, the Métis National Council and its member organizations have co-ordinated the bursary and scholarship program for Métis students pursuing studies in health sciences. In 2002 and 2003, the Métis Centre contributed to capacity building activities in Métis communities and organizations by co-ordinating the delivery of workshops on proposal writing throughout the Métis Nation. In addition to being provided with informational material, participants acquired hands-on experience to enable them to develop a successful funding submission. Last Update: May 15 2009 |
