Determinants of Health

Health is much more than the absence of disease. Our health is not only affected by our individual lifestyle choices but also by conditions of the physical and social environments we live in. To gain a better understanding of how to improve our health, researchers, health care practitioners and decision makers have agreed on a number of concepts and a tool for analysis, called determinants of health.

Addressing the broader determinants of health, such as housing, income and economic development, environment, food security and self-determination, is a key element of achieving improvements in Inuit health and wellness. Inuit-specific solutions rooted in cultural values and practices appear to work best while integrating the best evidence and practices from other systems.
