Traditional Knowledge

The First Nations Centre (FNC) is devoted to the protection, recognition and affirmation of First Nations traditional knowledge and traditional healing practices. The holistic and traditional knowledge of Elders – including traditional healing practices and medicines – form part of a continuum of care that promotes healthy lives for First Nations people.
The FNC recently began a focused initiative to address the role that traditional knowledge/healing/medicines continue to play in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of First Nations peoples.

On September 19th, 2006 the FNC sponsored a traditional healing circle of Elders during a week-long ceremonial gathering on Mi’kmaq traditional territory of the Elsipogtog First Nation. The purpose of the circle was to identify and explore future directions for the FNC in the area of support and protection for traditional knowledge. The FNC plans to support and attend gatherings like these on an annual basis, in order to identify and address First Nations needs and priorities related to traditional health, healing and related knowledge. Please refer to the full report from the event for more information.
