About Us

The First Nations Centre (FNC) was formed within NAHO to address the unique health and wellness priorities of First Nations.  The FNC has been a vital part of NAHO since 2001.

Our Vision

Our strength is our knowledge, and the foundation of healthy people, healthy communities and healthy nations.

Our Mission

The mission of the FNC is to advance First Nations health knowledge.  The FNC respects First Nations aspirations for self-determination, distinctiveness and diversity.  Working with First Nations, the FNC creates, promotes and shares health information and research.  The FNC develops tools and processes that assist in building capacity and transferring knowledge.

Our Objectives

  1. To build relationships with First Nations and the health sector;
  2. To assist First Nations in nation building as it relates to health (self-sufficiency, self determination, true transfer and securing appropriate resources);
  3. To develop and promote models of community-based health research, promotion and education;
  4. To produce and share research to support evidence-based health planning at a national, regional and community level;
  5. To create and support the use of tools that will build First Nations capacity for health research, health planning and health governance;
  6. To enhance the skills of health workers using community-based approaches; and,
  7. To remain true to traditions and values in our work and lives, drawing upon the knowledge and strength of our Elders and youth.

Governance

The FNC is under the direction and guidance of an AFN-appointed, regionally representative Governing Committee, with one seat designated for a representative from the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC).

Our work is guided by directions that were articulated by First Nations during national consultations undertaken by the AFN in 1998.  Through ongoing consultation and collaboration with our Governing Committee and other stakeholders, we ensure that our activities are responsive to First Nations health priorities.
