Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative (AHHRI)

In 2004, at the First Ministers Meeting, the federal government anncounced funding for an Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative (AHHRI) with a commitment of $100M over five years. The AHHRI has three main objectives:

  1. To increase the number of Aboriginal people working in health careers.
  1. To improve the retention of health care workers in Aboriginal communities.
  1. To adapt current health care educational curricula to improve cultural competence in Aboriginal health care.

The National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) is working in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) to develop an Aboriginal health human resource minimum data set.
